Starting your first BJJ class can feel like a big step. You may be wondering whether you need to be fit, what to wear, or whether everyone else will already know what they are doing.
You do not need experience to begin. A good first session is about learning the space, meeting the coach and getting a calm introduction to how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu works.
What to expect at your first BJJ class
When you arrive at The Kodokan, we will show you where to put your things and explain how to move on and off the mats. Your coach will talk you through the session and make sure you have a partner and a pace that feel appropriate.
You will not be expected to know techniques before you arrive. New people learn through simple movements, clear demonstrations and controlled practice.
What happens during a beginner-friendly session
A first BJJ class usually includes a gentle warm-up, a short explanation of a technique and time to practise it with a partner. The aim is not to win or keep up with anyone else. It is to understand the movement and ask questions.
You may hear a few new words, but your coach will explain them. You can stop, take a breath or ask for help whenever you need to.
What to wear and bring
Wear clean, comfortable clothing without zips or hard buttons. Bring a bottle of water and flip-flops to wear when you are off the mats. Keeping fingernails and toenails trimmed helps everyone train comfortably.
There is no need to buy specialist equipment before an Introduction. We will tell you what is useful once you have tried a session and know that training is right for you.
If you feel nervous
Most people feel nervous before their first BJJ class. That is completely normal. Let the coach know if you are unsure about anything, returning after time away from exercise, or managing an injury or limitation that may affect training.
Training is done with control and respect. You can tap to stop when a position feels uncomfortable, and you never need to push through something that does not feel right.

Your first visit at The Kodokan
An Introduction is a chance to see the academy, meet the team and understand how training could fit into your week. We will confirm the suitable class after speaking with you, so there is no pressure to make a booking before that conversation.
If you would like to take the first step, request a complimentary Introduction and we will be in touch.
