What to Expect in Your First BJJ Class Even If You’re Nervous
Starting something like Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about stepping onto the mats, it’s about stepping into a new rhythm, one that’s unfamiliar at first.
We know what the first day feels like. That blend of curiosity, awkwardness, and adrenaline. You don’t need to pretend that you’re not a little unsure. You’re not supposed to know what you’re doing yet; that’s what training is for.
Here’s what your first session will look like.
1. You’re Not Expected to Know Anything
You’ll be guided through the basics with clarity, movement, posture, where to keep your limbs so you don’t get tangled. You’ll mess things up and we’ll fix them together. That’s the point.

2. Yes, You Will Spar
You’ll spar on day one, but not recklessly.
We’ll explain the purpose behind it, give you objectives (survive, defend, breathe), and match you with partners who understand what day one feels like.
You won’t be fed to the wolves. But you will be given the real thing. That’s how you learn, by integrating early.
3. What to Wear
No zips. No buttons. No hard plastic. No piercings or jewellery at all.
Wear something soft that won’t snag or scratch. Joggers or leggings. Rashguard or t-shirt. That’s all you need.
4. You’ll Be Treated Like You Belong
No trial student is treated like an outsider.

5. What Surprises Most People
The calm.
For something that looks so physical, BJJ is surprisingly quiet once you’re in it. You’ll find yourself thinking clearly, breathing deeply, and paying attention in a way that’s hard to describe. That presence? That’s part of the art.
