Walking through the doors of The Kodokan for the first time, I quickly discovered that the art of Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu (BJJ) isn’t just about learning how to control another person’s body—it’s about learning how to control your own mind. Over the past two decades I’ve watched countless students transform not only their physical abilities but their mental fortitude. Today I want to talk about something we don’t always address in class: how training BJJ builds on and off the mat and why resilience matters.

Facing pressure head‑on
During your first few classes, the pressure can feel overwhelming—literally. Someone is Developing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu resilience helps you remain composed under pressure and overcome challenges on and off the m at.T Trying to pass your guard and you’re not sure what to do. This is where the magic happens. Instead of panicking, you learn to adjust properly, protect your neck and find space. You discover that staying composed leads to solutions.
We deliberately put our students under controlled stress. We start drills from disadvantageous positions, like having a partner already on your back, so that you become comfortable in uncomfortable situations. Over time this practice hardwires a calm and analytical response to adversity. That mental rewiring is the foundation of resilience.
Benefits beyond the mat
Problem solving: Every roll is a puzzle. When you practice techniques like guard retention or sweeps, you’re training your brain to think several steps ahead.
Emotional regulation: Deep breathing and mindful movement in BJJ reduce stress hormones, promoting a sense of calm that carries into daily life.
Confidence: Surviving and escaping bad positions builds a quiet confidence. You realise that you’re capable of handling more than you thought.
Community support: Our tight‑knit team encourages each other through every challenge. Knowing your teammates have your back makes it easier to face obstacles elsewhere.
Practical tips to cultivate resilience in training
Embrace the fundamentals: Basics like posture, grip fighting and guard recovery are your foundation. Mastery here will give you confidence when facing more complex problems.
Set small goals: Focus on improving one element each session.
Reflect after class: Take a moment to write down what you struggled with and how you overcame it. This reinforces learning and reminds you of your progress.
Ask questions: Our coaches and senior
belts are here to help. There is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to deepening your understanding.
