Group classes are at the heart of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. They give you regular partners, a shared training culture and time to practise with different people.
A private BJJ lesson can be useful alongside group training when you want focused time on a particular question, position or goal. It is not a shortcut, but it can help you understand a detail clearly and make a sensible plan for practising it.
What private BJJ lessons can help you work on
A one-to-one session lets you slow the pace down and look closely at the parts of your training that feel unclear.
Clarify a specific position
You may want to understand a guard pass, an escape, a grip sequence or a transition that has not yet clicked in class. A private lesson gives you time to ask questions and repeat the detail without rushing.
Build a useful practice plan
A coach can help you choose a small number of drills or positions to revisit in group classes. Keeping the plan simple makes it easier to practise consistently.
Prepare to return after time away
If you have been away from training, a focused session can help you refresh fundamental movements and rebuild confidence before joining a regular class again.
Get feedback on how you are moving
Sometimes the issue is not effort but a small detail: posture, distance, timing or the order of a movement. Direct feedback can help you recognise what to change.
How to get the most from a private BJJ lesson
Come with one or two areas you would like to understand. You do not need technical language; “I keep getting stuck here” is a perfectly good starting point.
Ask your coach to show the movement at a pace you can follow. Then practise it slowly with feedback before adding resistance. Make a note of the key point to revisit in your next class.
Keep group training in the picture
Private sessions work best when you can return to the idea in normal training. Group classes, drilling and controlled sparring are where you develop timing with different partners.
You can check the current class schedule and read what to expect at your first BJJ class if you are planning a regular routine.
